Sacred Heart Church (Sacré-Cœur)

Rue de la Fuye

The plan to build a chapel on rue de la Fuye dates from 1893, on the initiative of Father Biet.

Thanks to his perseverance, Father Biet raised the funds through an appeal for donations, recalled by the marble plaque at the back of the church.

The site lies on the corner of rue de la Fuye and rue de la Tour d’Auvergne. The project was approved in 1894 and building work began two years later, to be completed in 1897.

On 22 April, the chapel was blessed and consecrated by Bishop Renou.

Simple in its architectural design, the chapel is lit by ten windows donated by generous benefactors. The statue of the Sacred Heart towers over the high altar, and an altarpiece by Avisseau adorns the church.

Canon Biet celebrated daily and Sunday Masses in this new chapel for three years, before being called to another mission.

On 21 May 1907, the chapel became a parish church.

In 1920, Father Larthe, the parish priest, built the Lady Chapel.

In 1992 the Sacred Heart church joined the “paroisses unies” (united parishes), which in 2008 became today’s Saint-Maurice parish.

The church is open only during services.
